FANGFANG AND ANITA PUBLISHED A PAPER IN THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF STEM EDUCATION
February 2021
This paper describes the development of the Sci-math Sensemaking Framework through a review of the literature. This Framework has nine categories describing science and mathematical sensemaking dimensions. Thi Sci-math Sensemaking Framework will allow for research to be done on the teaching and learning of mathematical equations in science.

THE BIOVEDA ASSESSMENT IS PUBLISHED IN PLOS ONE

Jenna, Jess, Anita, and collaborator Yaniv Brandvain are co-authors on this manuscript, which describes the development of and analyses to provide validity evidence of the BioVEDA assessment. We developed this assessment to measure undergraduate biology students' understanding of variation in biological investigations. Click here to read the full article!
A DESCRIPTION OF THE BIOVEDA CURRICULUM IS PUBLISHED IN COURSESOURCE

Jess and Jenna are co-first authors on this publication, which describes the BioVEDA curriculum. This curriculum is a 5-module series that guides students in exploring variation in biological investigations. This publication includes a step-by-step guide to teaching the BioVEDA curriculum, along with all of the materials necessary to do so (worksheets, lesson plans, and PowerPoints). ANITA CO-FACILITATED A WORKSHOP ON INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS AT ICLS

Anita and collaborators Melanie Peffer, Kristy Daniel, and Myra McConnell received NSF funding for the workshop held before the International Conference of the Learning Sciences (ICLS). This workshop engaged participants in defining and discussing the role of interdisciplinary research involving Learning Sciences and Discipline-Based Educational Research.

FANGFANG AND ANITA PUBLISHED A PAPER IN CBE-LIFE SCIENCES EDUCATION

The paper describes their study about students' descriptions of 'mutation' in biology. Mutation is unique in that it is both a process (causing a change in DNA) and an entity (the altered DNA). However, even after instruction, most students describe mutation as an entity.

Jess and Jenna were two of 30 people invited to attend a writing workshop to prepare authors to submit an article about their innovative classroom lessons to CourseSource, an open-access journal of peer-reviewed teaching resources for undergraduate biological sciences.

ANITA ATTENDED THE UNDERGRADUATE BIOLOGY EDUCATION GORDON RESEARCH CONFERENCE

The GRC took place in Lewiston, Maine, and brought together researchers, practitioners and leaders in the undergraduate biology education field to discuss recent research findings to help understand how change can be fostered and implemented to more effectively scale improvements to undergraduate biology education.
JESS AND FANGFANG WERE INVITED TO ATTEND THEÂ SANDRA K. ABELL INSTITUTE FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS

The Institute was held at the Tennessee STEM Education Center at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), and focused on Science Education Research in Disciplinary Contexts. Jess and FangFang were two of 24 PhD students from around the globe that were accepted to attend the institute.

The Critical Data Viz workshop was the seventh annual workshop in the Information Frontiers program training students in data and information science topics. It was hosted by the Center for Science of Information, an NSF Science & Technology Center.
